With “The Fontenay”, a real city resort has been created in the heart of Hamburg, directly on the waterfront. It is rare to find such a special location for a visionary hotel project in Germany today. Hamburg architect Jan Störmer drew inspiration for the design from the surrounding park landscape and the waterline of the Außenalster lake. The organically shaped building consists of three interlocking circles, which are intended to be reminiscent of large treetops, and blends smoothly into the Alster landscape. The three circles merge in the center to form a waist from which the elevators rise and where a glazed courtyard planted with trees and the 27-meter-high enclosed atrium can be found. “Hotel in the park” – this is how Jan Störmer titled his thoughts when he started with the first drafts. Due to its amorphous shape, the hotel has no back side – it is surrounded by greenery from all sides and is flooded with light. The 14,000m² of glass surfaces blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, a perfect balance of nature and urbanity.
