A new ensemble of buildings will be built on the western Strandkai, which will have a significant impact on the urban skyline of Hamburg’s HafenCity. The Strandkai project fills one of the last large vacant construction sites within HafenCity Hamburg. On this site, in the extreme south of HafenCity, several residential projects and a base building with a total of up to 64,000 m² of above-ground GFA are being realized. The Strandkai quarter is located between Grasbrookhafen and the Elbstrom, with the planning area comprising the western tip with approx. 14,500 m² of land on building plots 55, 56 and 57. From the urban planning point of view, the building BF 55 has a uniform design. It is identifiable in the interplay with large-grained buildings on the neighboring quayside tips such as the Elbphilharmonie, the HafenCity University (HCU), the Intelligent Quarters, the Kehrwiederspitze, but also the adjacent Unilever building. The figure is dynamically tailored in plan and elevation to its location at the head of the quay. As the end point of a series of blocks and of individual buildings, the last building field deviates from the angular template with a bulbous sweep. This widens the view down the Elbe to the light spot at Strandhöft. The required public walkway leads to the top via a slightly uphill ramp along the north side of the house. This elevated position on the mound strengthens the joint between residential and public use of the base floors, and from there affords a panoramic view of the city with the Philharmonic Hall in the foreground. The slope towards the top stages the view into the depth of the Elbe.
